Same As It Ever Was?

Yes, if you guessed the title of this post as part of the lyrics to "Once In A Lifetime" by The Talking Heads, you are correct! The new year seems to inspire a desire to be reflective about the past year.  What things will be the "same as it ever was"? What will be different? What do I want to change and what do I want to keep the same?  The lyrics of that quirky, famous "Once in a Lifetime" go in part like this;

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

I am taking a different approach in that I've been thinking of those old sayings and words of advice which in my younger days I laughed at or totally dismissed, BUT I now find true.  You know the ones; things your teachers tried to hammer into your stubborn head that you didn't understand or believe; sayings your parents or grandparents said that you laughed at when they weren't around.  Here are five famous ones to get you thinking:

Here are a few of mine:

Life is a mystery to be lived and not a problem to be solved--my grandmother Ann Jamison used to say this and a few others every time I spoke with her and we would get a chuckle out of all her sayings.  This is one has proven true.  I only get stuck when I start treating life as a "problem".

Enjoy the Journey--Still a tough one for me, but the older I get, the more I see that in reality getting the prize is a fleeting, momentary rush and so much of life is the journey. If you are miserable until you reach every goal, then...well you get the picture.

When you love yourself, things fall easily into place--Who doesn't like this saying? But boy, it is a process to love yourself in a healthy way. Yet, it is essential and the more you are okay with yourself, the more you are okay with the world and others around you.

Don't Mistake Kindness For Dumbness-My dad always said this one and I now find it is so true. Some people will dismiss you entirely or underestimate you just because you are kind.

So what are some of the sayings that made you roll your eyes and yet you now find true? Don't be shy, admit it and Inspire others by sharing yours and anything you want to say about them in the comment section below!
